Reduce Stress, Stage Your Home, and Stay Organized
Are you planning a move and feeling overwhelmed? At Mission 2 Organize, we understand that moving is one of life’s most stressful transitions. Between coordinating logistics, preparing your home for sale or rent, and packing up your belongings, on top of your already busy life, is a lot. Fortunately, there’s a way to get ahead of the chaos. It’s a little process we like to call pre-packing.
Pre-packing is the process of gradually packing up nonessential items before your official moving timeline begins. It not only makes moving day and the last few days leading up to it easier, but it also plays a key role in staging your home to attract potential buyers and competitive offers, or to get a lease signed quickly.
With a thoughtful plan, pre-packing can help you feel more in control, and far less rushed when moving day arrives.
Why Pre-Packing Matters
Pre-packing isn’t just about getting a head start. It’s about being strategic.
When you begin packing early, you naturally:
- Declutter and edit your belongings
- Make plans to sell, donate, or dispose of items you no longer need
- Get a sense of how much stuff you own (helpful when it’s time to estimate the number of boxes and size of moving truck you’ll need)
- Make closets, cabinets, and storage areas look larger for realtor photos and showings
- Clear out, clean, and even make repairs to forgotten nooks and crannies
- Protect valuable or sentimental items so they don’t get lost or damaged
Depersonalizing Is a Part of the Process
If you’re selling your home, this is especially important. Buyers want to envision themselves in your space, not feel like they’re walking through someone else’s life. Depersonalizing your home helps achieve this goal and is both a part of the pre-packing process and a key component of effective staging.
Home Staging for a Successful Sale
Fewer knick-knacks on shelves, less furniture crowding rooms, and more visible storage space all contribute to a home that feels move-in ready. Once you’ve decluttered and de-personalized, you’re a few steps ahead of those who haven’t done those things. Cha-ching!
When Should You Start Pre-Packing?
One of the most common questions we hear is: When is the right time to start packing?
The answer: Earlier than you think.
Ideally, pre-packing should begin before your realtor (if you have one) schedules listing photos. Starting early allows you to work at a steady, manageable pace rather than rushing through everything at the last minute.
Here’s a general prep timeline to guide you:
6–8 Weeks Before Listing or Move
Start with a walkthrough of your home. Identify items you don’t use regularly and begin sorting into categories: keep, donate, discard, pack.
If you don’t plan to DYI the pack, this is the perfect time to get your Organizers involved. At M2O, we book out very quickly during moving season, so it’s important to bring us into the process as early as possible to get your preferred dates.
4–6 Weeks Before Listing or Move
Begin packing non-essential items (see suggestions below). Focus on clearing surfaces, minimizing décor, and simplifying each room. Remove family photos, kids artwork, décor with family names—anything that personalizes the space to you and your family.
2–4 Weeks Before Listing or Move
Continue pre-packing while refining your staging. Remove excess furniture, if needed, to create more space and flow. Store boxes out of sight (more on that below) and schedule realtor photos.
During Showings (If Listing)
Maintain a clean, minimal look.
1–2 Weeks Before the Move
Pack remaining daily-use items, leaving only absolute essentials accessible. Even plates and glasses should be packed, leaving out paper plates and cups.
1-2 Days Before the Move
We always tell our clients who are moving to pack a suitcase for each family member. Include all of the things you would need for a week. Think not only clothes and shoes, but toiletries, medicine, and anything you’ll need for work or planned activities.
This is also the time to pack a box of all those items you’ll need right away when you get to your new place. Mark it as “Open First” and make sure the movers put it into the moving truck last. Think remote controls, toilet paper, hand soap, paper towels, chargers and other cords, and moving-related paperwork.
Day of the Move
Load your car with your personal essentials, supervise the movers, and do a last around for any forgotten items before locking the door for the last time.

What Should You Pack First?
The key to successful pre-packing is focusing on nonessential items—the things you won’t miss in the short term but that contribute to clutter.
Here are the best categories to start with:
Personal Items and Memorabilia
Family photos, keepsakes, awards, and highly personal décor should be packed early. Not only are these items rarely needed day-to-day, but removing them helps depersonalize your space for buyers.
Seasonal Items
Holiday decorations, off-season clothing (like winter coats in summer), and specialty items (like the turkey pan) are ideal for early packing.
Books and Media
Bookshelves can feel heavy and visually busy. Packing a portion of your collection lightens the space and makes rooms feel larger.
Decorative Items
Extra vases, knickknacks, and layered décor can be reduced significantly. Aim to leave just a few intentional pieces per space. If you have a Realtor, ask them what they want to keep around. We bet they have an opinion!
Extra Linens
Keep one or two sets of sheets and towels accessible. Pack the rest.
Specialty Kitchen Items
Small appliances, serving ware, and items you only use occasionally can be boxed up early to free up cabinet space. Potential renters and buyers will open cabinets and drawers to look inside.
Closets
Speaking of places where the potential new residents will look…closets!! This is the #1 place folks want to make sure will hold all their goodies. Clear out half of the stuff in there. It’ll help you prepack and clear the way for a smooth move.
Where Should You Store Pre-Packed Boxes?
This is one of the most important—and often overlooked—parts of pre-packing. If you are planning to sell your home or even live there, stacked boxes should not interfere with the place’s appearance or you living your life.
Here are the best options (in order of preference):
Garage or Basement (neatly organized)
The garage or basement is often the best solution, if you have one. Designate a clearly defined area, stack boxes neatly and keep pathways clear.
With Friends or Family
If possible, temporarily store a few boxes off-site with family or friends to reduce visual clutter. Plus, this is usually a FREE option!
Closets (strategically)
Only use your closets if you absolutely have to. If you must, avoid overfilling them. Buyers will open doors—and crowded closets can make potential storage feel limited.
Off-Site Storage
Storing your pre-packed boxes in an offsite storage unit costs money, but may be worth it especially if your home will be shown frequently. It keeps boxes completely out of sight and frees up valuable space.
Tips for Staying Organized While Pre-Packing
Pre-packing works best when paired with simple systems:
- Label every box clearly with both its contents and the room of destination. (In addition to labeling what’s in the boxes, we at M2O like to color-code boxes with colored masking tape for easy identification for the movers.)
- Keep an inventory list (digital or written). This is particularly smart if you’re sending any of the boxes to longer-term storage.
- Pack similar items together. “Like goes with like.”
- Avoid overpacking boxes. Keep them manageable to lift. (M2O’s rule of thumb: heavy items should be put in the smallest box that can fit them. If a box is getting too heavy, use lighter items to fill out the remaining space.)
- Use uniform box sizes for easier stacking. (M2O’s onsite staff loves Uhaul’s standard boxes, which come in small, medium, large, and extra-large.)

Final Thoughts
Pre-packing is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress during a move—and one of the most overlooked.
By starting early, focusing on non-essentials, and using the process to support staging, you create a smoother transition from one home to the next and increase the chances your home will sell or rent faster—and you’ll likely get a better offer.
So consider pre-packing for your next move. When moving day arrives, you won’t just be ready. You’ll already be ahead.
